IRRISOFT at Sakia.org
IRRISOFT - Database and Online Applications in Irrigation, Drainage & Hydrology at Sakia.org
Objective
The main objective of the IRRISOFT service was to provide freely accessible, quality-controlled software descriptions, reviews, download facilities, as well as online versions of applications in the wider field of irrigation, drainage and hydrology.
Background
The original IRRISOFT service was established in 1995 at the Department of Rural Engineering and Natural Resource Protection of the University of Kassel in Germany [Stein, 1996] .
Technical descriptions of more than 100 software packages were compiled and published online and presented in a unified structure, allowing scientists and practitioners to find the tools needed and even download some selected packages. Co-operation with institutions such as ILRI (The Netherlands) and ICID was initiated to update and extend, as well as to merge existing knowledge on irrigation, drainage and hydrology software worldwide [Jurriens and Lenselink, 1996] .
Some historical context about the IRRISOFT initiative, also in the context of the Sakia.org services, is given in the IRRISOFT Background and History section.
