Sakia.org comprises of the following major services and modules.

IRRIGATION-L - latest technical discussions online

IRRIGATION-L is one of the two oldest and major e-mail discussion lists in the field of irrigation world wide. It was established in 1994 and has been active ever since. It provides the facility and platform for national and international exchange on issues related to the field of irrigation theory and practice. To participate in the discussions only an e-mail address is needed. However it has also a website with fully searchable and threaded online archives of all postings since the establishment of the list in 1994 (more than 5,500). While all discussions take place exclusively through the email based discussion list, all new postings are sorted into the threads instantly and may be reviewed and searched online shortly after they were sent out to the list. IRRIGATION-L.org also holds all the relevant information needed by users to manage the list effectively on a day to day basis.

Subjects recently discussed are (thematically summarised):

  • Soil moisture sensing
  • Identification of soils that should NOT be irrigated
  • Evaporation and wind drift from sprinklers
  • Irrigation scheduling
  • Irrigation control systems
  • Effects of effluent irrigation
  • Estimating reference ET
  • Rainfall harvesting for irrigation
  • … and many more.

e-Journal of Land and Water (ISSN 1832-5149)

The ’e-Journal of Land Water’ (eJLW) was launched in late February 2005. It is an open access and peer reviewed, international scientific journal for research and developments in land and water. Articles published in it will be available online free of charge to the end user. The technical scope of the ’e-Journal of Land and Water’ is to publish scientific papers of national and international significance covering basic, applied and strategic research in the area of land and water. It focuses on the integration of the various aspects of land and water management and conservation at a range of scales. While the journal provides an ideal framework for research topics of multi-disciplinary nature, it equally allows to cover specific components from the wider land and water arena:

Currently we are in the process of compiling the first issue of the journal, and hence are soliciting some high quality manuscripts that are within the scope of eJLW. Submissions are welcome and need to be launched online through the authors’ gateway.

IRRISOFT - call for software descriptions and reviews

IRRISOFT Database and online Applications in Irrigation, Drainage & Hydrology.

The main objective of the IRRISOFT service is to provide freely accessible online versions of applications in the wider field of irrigation, drainage and hydrology as well as quality controlled software descriptions. It is a service predominantly for software packages which are available free of charge to the end user or where the price is limited to contributions towards expenses. IRRISOFT was already established in 1995, but was taken down for a complete overhaul and revision. We are currently working on new and revised programme descriptions/reviews to be added.

If you are the programmer of a software package or you have worked extensively with one and would like to write a description / review please download the template from the link below and send it back to me. The template (rtf) is readable in all word processing packages and has the structure and some explanations in place to aid the software description and review. The author of this review has not necessarily to be the programmer or author of the software packages. However, it is recommended that a close link is established to the programmer or originator allowing his/her support and contributions possible as a joint author of this review and description (paper). All applications have to be (made) available and will be checked against the review.

Sakia.org merchandise shop opened & donations in support of Sakia.org

I am proud to announce that the new ‘Sakia.org online shop’ could be opened. It is being maintained at ‘CafePress’ to provide Sakia.org branded merchandise in support of all the free Sakia.org services.

All the content and services within the Sakia.org group have been provided free of charge to end users for more than a decade now. However, to be able to continue this valuable service financial support is needed from the national and international ’land and water’ community. Any single contribution from either individual or group will support the maintenance, improvement and extension of this service, allowing the addition of more valuable knowledge and support online.

Please purchase one of the Sakia.org items from the Sakia.org shop which will financially support all the services provided and which will help to spread the word about the Sakia.org initiative.

https://www.sakia.org/shop ()

Alternatively you may also show your support by placing a donation online which will be performed and managed through the secure PayPal® system. Every single donation will make a difference and credit will be given to donors on the donors’ page within the Sakia.org site, anonymous donations will also be acknowledged.

Your support will ultimately answer the question whether the user community feels that this type of free professional service provided since 1994 is worth while supporting and still has a role to play in the continuing evolution of the Internet.

From the Editor

Dear Sakia.org Members and Supporters,

This is the first issue of the Sakia.org eNews which was under preparation for quite some time and I am glad that I could finally send it out to you. Some of you might have already wondered why no news arrived despite the ticking of the ’newsletter box’ during your subscription. One of the reasons is that it always takes longer to put together the first issue of a paper or newsletter as it just takes some time until all the various bits a pieces flow together. In addition I was waiting for more substance and news to accumulate and of course for the time to finally be able to do it. Sakia.org is a small community and does not have an automatic ’news generator’ fed by thousands of members and institutions around the globe which then generates newsletters on the press of a button. Sakia.org eNews are compiled manually and a newsletter is only sent out when there is actually something to report or to highlight. And what, that is actually also up to you and the knowledge you would like to share with the community.

Sakia.org was always designed to be a dedicated community oriented service which provides free access to information and knowledge from within the area of ’land and water’. I believe that knowledge is a public good and hence should be free and that the free access is a fundamental key to our wellbeing and our future. Sakia.org is a service for the community and hence relies on support from the community. Your support will ultimately answer the question whether this concept will survive against multinational enterprises and commercial pressures and whether this type of free professional service has still has a role to play in our future - I personally hope it will.

Once again, many thanks to all who contributed their knowledge and have supported this initiative over the years. Also a warm welcome to all new members who joined the Sakia.org community more recently. Please remember, there is always a human face behind every system so please do not hesitate to contact me if you should have an inquiry or need some assistance.

Best regards,

Dr Thomas-M. Stein (Sakia.org)
